Firefighters were busy in Syracuse's Westcott neighborhood Saturday night. A fire broke out at a home on Roosevelt Avenue just before 9 p.m.
Fire officials said when they arrived on scene they were met with heavy smoke coming from the basement. Two people lived in the house, but neither were home at the time.
The fire spread to the first floor after going unnoticed. A neighbor then called 911 reporting smoke coming from the house.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire rather quickly. The house did not have working smoke detectors.
