ONEIDA, N.Y. — 122 workers at Green Empire Farms in the City of Oneida tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.
Madison County leaders held a news conference to discuss the outbreak Watch the live stream below.
52 of the cases are in Oneida County and County Executive Anthony Picente said they are not residents of the county.
“These are seasonal employees that are hired through a contracting firm out of Indiana,” he said.
The county executive said the enclosed greenhouse provides conditions that are prime for growth of this disease.
He said no one has access the the facility except for the employees who are now in isolation and none have been hospitalized.
“Clearly it raises a great deal of questions about what was done in preparation or what type of PPE was used,” he said.
It is not clear yet how many of the cases reside in Madison County.
In an email, the county said the Madison County Health Department is working with the state department of health to set up a testing site for all the workers and those who came in close contact with them.
They are also working with MAC Contracting, who employs some of the employees, as well as other local businesses to make sure those impacted get proper care.
Madison County will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to give more information.
