New businesses point to emerging Hawley Green neighborhood in Syracuse

83 and Company in the Hawley Green neighborhood of Syracuse.

83 and Company is the bakery every neighborhood wants, a small locally owned shop, crafting unique cakes and cupcakes in a beautiful setting. The building, and the neighborhood, has undergone a transformation in the past few years, thanks in large part to building owners Laura Serway and Cindy Seymour.

"We were on the bandwagon to demolish when we first moved into the neighborhood. It was boarded up and had been vacant for almost 30 years,â?? Cindy Seymour says.

Now countless hours of labor later, it is home to Esther Houstonâ??s bakery and a centerpiece of an up and coming neighborhood.

"We're all in this together because we all support each other,â?? Houston says.

Seymour and Serway own Laciâ??s Tapas Bar, and have been at the heart of improving Hawley Green over the past four years. Today they celebrated the openings of 83 and Company, a boutique wine store at 105 Green Street and the Fresh Spa.

Owner Mila Cross moved her business from Liverpool and believes in Hawley Green so much, she decided to live here as well.

"I have clients that have moved from F-M to downtown, so it is the time,â?? Cross says.

The new businesses believe Hawley Green has turned the corner, and the neighborhood just minutes from downtown is becoming a destination.

"When you have your heart and soul into a project it makes a difference in the outcome and how you feel,â?? Serway says.

A lot more is in the works for the Hawley Green neighborhood, including a possible dance studio, a café and new condo development.
