CNY Central is happy to announce Niko Tamurian as the station groupâ??s new Sports Director.
He replaces John Evenson, who left CNY Central earlier this month for a position in West Palm Beach.
Niko is a Central New York native, graduating from East Syracuse-Minoa High School before attending Onondaga Community College and SUNY-Buffalo State.
Niko began his career at CNY Central in 2007 as a part-time sports photographer and reporter, eventually moving his way up to weekend sports anchor in 2008. During his time here, Niko has covered a wide array of sporting events, including the Big East tournament, the Pinstripe Bowl, numerous high school sports championships and has reported on location from games across the country.
Niko has produced and reported many of the CNY Central Athlete and Game of the Week segments featured in the CNY Central newscasts and online. Viewers may also know Niko from the fun segments he puts together with his favorite partner in crime, Jack the Sports Dog.
"Being born and raised here in Syracuse it's been an honor to deliver the latest sports news to our viewers over the past 6 years, especially since I was that viewer watching my entire life for the latest news on my favorite local teams," Niko says of his new job. "It's truly a dream come true to now be named Sports Director and to be able chart the course for our sports coverage going forward based on knowing what's important to Central New York.â??
The Syracuse Press Club has honored Niko with several awards including Newcomer of the Year in 2008, Best Sports Story and Best Sports Show in 2009 and 1st place Human Interest story in 2010. Last year he was named one of Onondaga Community Collegeâ??s â??Alumni Faces,â?? an honor given to distinguished alumni for their achievements and contributions to the OCC.
