NY says 95% of residents now have health insurance

A record 95% of New Yorkers now have health insurance, after record enrollments for the NY State of Health plans.

Signups for health insurance under the New York State of Health plans have hit a record. The enrollment period ended on January 31st saw 4.8 million New Yorkers signing up. That means 95% of state residents have health insurance.

This year's numbers were being watched closely, in part because changes in tax laws: Starting with the 2019 plan year (for which you'll file taxes in April 2020), the penalty you had to pay for not having health insurance no longer applies . Some were concerned that would mean a drop in the number of people getting insured. Instead, New York saw a 10% increase in health insurance enrollments, compared to last year.
