Officials on scene of standoff situation in Cortland

Cortland County Sheriff Mark Helms says there was a in Broome County ended in the city of Cortland, where a standoff is underway.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A standoff at a hotel in Cortland County Officials continues.

Officials say a male and female locked themselves in a hotel room at the Hampton Inn on River Street Friday morning and refused to come out.

State Police, Cortland City Police and Cortland County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene to negotiate to get the pair out of the hotel. Later in the afternoon, police said the woman has since come out of the room and is safe. The male subject is still inside and is possibly armed.

Officials say the male subject violated his parole which led to his pursuit early Friday morning.

Cortland County Sheriff Mark Helms says the pursuit began in Broome County for the male suspect and female that ended in the city of Cortland.

Officials say the pursuit ended in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on River Street when the suspect got out of the car and went inside the hotel.

According to the Cortland County Sheriff's department, all residents and guests are out of the hotel and safe.

A guest at the Hampton Inn says the Ramada Hotel next door is giving them shelter and SUNY Cortland has brought them food.

Around 11 p.m. Friday a large noise could be heard coming from the building. Our crews on the scene say the SWAT Team has been on the scene since 9:00 p.m.

Dispatchers say River Street is closed from Clinton Avenue to Cleveland Street.
