Five injured in I-81 accident in Nedrow; truck driver fell asleep, troopers say

Truck crash on Interstate-81 near Nedrow

Five people were injured in an accident on Interstate 81 earlier Tuesday that had the south-bound lanes at Exit 16 near Nedrow closed for several hours, according to Onondaga County 911.

State Police say the driver of a rescue mission box truck heading northbound fell asleep and crossed into the southbound lane and struck a van with five passengers. All five, including one child, were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

There have been no reports of any tickets issued. The Rescue Mission had the following to say in a statement Tuesday afternoon:

We’re still awaiting information at this point. We are cooperating with the authorities, and of course our thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved with the accident.

Both southbound lanes were re-opened by 1 p.m.

State police say the accident could've been much worse, given holiday traffic and the involvement of both directions of the highway.
