Court docs: Abandoned infant survived 3 days in plastic bag in Southern Tier

17-year-old Harriette Hoyt, from Sayre, PA, has been charged with 2nd degree attempted murder.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (AP) -- Court documents say an 8-month-old baby found alive in a plastic bag outside an upstate New York home had been abandoned there for three days by her 17-year-old mother.

Elmira police say neighbors checking out a noise Tuesday, August 8, found a baby girl whose feet were sticking out of the bag. They called 911 and tended to the child until police and emergency crews arrived.

Officials say the baby is in stable condition at a hospital.

Later Tuesday, police charged Harriette Hoyt with attempted murder. Officials say she's from Sayre, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles southeast of Elmira.

The felony complaint against Hoyt says the child was abandoned near bushes in a backyard on August 5th. "The defendant made no attempts for over 72 hours thereafter to contact the child nor anyone in regards to the child's life and safety," the complaint says.

She's being held in the Chemung County Jail. Her public defender wasn't available for comment.
