Police: Man distracted resident while other suspect took property from upstairs bedroom

New York State Police in Herkimer is investigating a burglary that occurred late last week in the town of Schuyler, in Herkimer County.

According to a police, a man knocked at the door of a residence around 2 p.m. Friday in the town of Schuyler. He identified himself to the elderly resident as working for the "town" and needed to check the water pressure for the sewer system, police said.

When the homeowner let him in, he asked to go downstairs to the washing machine and asked the homeowner to run a wash cycle, police said. When this was going on, a second male entered the home and took property from an upstairs bedroom, according to police.

Investigators believe that the suspects may have used a tan-colored van. The man who first came into the house spoke broken English and may have been of Spanish descent, police said.
