Snow, sleet, freezing rain to create icy conditions Wednesday evening

Forecast Road Impacts Ahead

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the following counties:
--Onondaga, Yates, Seneca, southern Cayuga, Schuyler, Tompkins, Cortland, Oneida, Madison, Chenango, Otsego, & southern Cayuga counties until 7 AM Thursday.
--Ontario, Wayne and northern Cayuga counties until 1 AM Thursday.
--Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis and Herkimer counties until 7 AM Thursday.

This Winter Weather Advisory is issued because snow accumulation and icing from freezing rain is expected in the affected areas, but not enough to majorly disrupt travel. It should also not be enough to cause widespread damage trees and power lines. Instead, slick conditions on roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways are likely.
--Freezing rain is precipitation that falls as liquid rain, but then freezes on contact with roads, sidewalks, cars, trees and power lines.
--As ice builds up on trees and power lines, it is possible that tree branches and power lines may be downed.
--Keep this in mind if you travelling to or live in these counties.

If your area has a Winter Weather Advisory, here is what you should do:
--Some light ice accumulation will be occurring in the advised area. Be prepared for some hazardous conditions in the advised area.
--Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on
--Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if warnings are issued you will know.
--Periodically check NBC3, CBS5 and CW6 for updates on the weather and possible issuance of lake effect snow warnings and advisories.
--Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to other counties, especially if you are travelling.
--Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.
