Welding fuel explosion, leak caused closure of South Townsend Street, officials say
SYRACUSE, N.Y. —
An explosion and leak of hazardous material caused a closure of part of South Townsend Street in Syracuse.
The closure affected the area of South Townsend Street near E. Adams Street.
Multiple crews were on the scene trying to address the leak Wednesday morning.
A witness in the area says they heard a loud "boom" and spotted flames coming from a vehicle at around 10 a.m. Fire officials say a tank of welding fuel in the back of a pickup truck exploded and caught fire. The fire was put out within minutes; the driver of the pickup and a nearby car were able to get away unscathed, officials said.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
