Super weather plus super moon and strawberry moon this weekend

What exactly is a â??supermoonâ?? or a â??super full moon?â?? Regular full moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the moonâ??s orbit. The orbit around the Earth is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). The supermoon occurs when a full moon occurs at perigee.

What makes this full moon different?
Perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the moons that occur on the apogee side of the moonâ??s orbit. This is due to the moon being closer to the Earth at perigee instead of apogee.

What affect does this have?

Tides are affected by moon phases. However, according to the NOAA, there should be little effect worse than a few inches or so on local tides. There is a neat video from youtube above attached to this web story that explains what a super full moon is and what it can do. There are some people who think full moons and super full moons can cause havoc and chaos. According to multiple sources, the moon cannot directly cause earthquakes or other natural disasters.

When does the moon rise and set on Saturday night

â?¢ The moon will rise in Syracuse at 7:58pm Saturday June 22nd, just before sunset.

â?¢ The moon will set in Syracuse at 5:42am Sunday June 23rd, just after sunrise.

â?¢ The moon will become completely full at 7:32am after the moon has set.

â?¢ The moon will be at perigee (closest to the Earth) at 7:54am after the moon has set.

Will the weather cooperate to see the super full moon

We will be able to enjoy Saturday evening, Saturday night and early Sunday morning with very comfortable temperatures. Skies appear to be partly cloudy through this period. While some clouds will pass through, I do not expect a completely overcast night. This should mean a good viewing forecast from sunset Saturday through sunrise Sunday.

What is a â??strawberry moonâ???

According, to Native American folklore, typically the June full moon corresponds with the harvest of strawberries, which are in season here in Central New York.
