Frontier Airlines is coming to the Syracuse Airport and bringing routes to four cities with it.

The airline will offer nonstop service from the Syracuse Hancock International Airport to Denver and Raleigh/Durham, N.C., starting on July 2. Those flights will fly on Mondays and Fridays.

On August 12, Frontier will add nonstop flights to Chicago's O'Hare airport and Orlando.

Flights to Chicago will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays; flights to Orlando will be on Mondays and Fridays.

"We are really highly confident that the low fares that we're going to bring in to this community are going to take hold," Frontier CIO Rick Zeni said. Frontier, based out of Denver, is known for offering low-cost flights compared to other carriers.

All of this was announced at a news conference at the Syracuse Airport Tuesday. The airport had teased the announcement for a week, saying on its Twitter page that something "SYRiously big" was coming.

Officials at Wednesday's announcement — including U.S. Rep. John Katko, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, and New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul — lauded the Frontier announcement as a major arrival at the Syracuse Airport, which is in the midst of a major revamp.

"This should telegraph to other businesses that this is the place to be," Hochul said, pointing to the airport renovations as a contributing factor to attracting Frontier. Officials said Wendesday those renovations should be complete by October 31.

Another carrier considered to be ultra-low cost, Allegiant, announced it would have direct flights from Syracuse to Nashville, Tennessee, starting in June. The seasonal route will operate twice weekly.
