Syracuse Police investigate three robberies at gunpoint involving 'Marketplace' apps

Syracuse Police say the app "Offer Up" was used in the robberies.

Syracuse Police are investigating three robberies at gunpoint that involve the use of "Marketplace apps."

According to officials, the robberies happened between Dec. 1 and Dec.5 and involve the use of "Marketplace" apps like "Let Go" or "Offer Up."

Police say the victims in each of the incidents listed items for sale on the app and then scheduled a meeting with an interested buyer to sell the product.

Sgt. Richard Helterline said these meetings took place on Isabella Street and North Alvord Street. When the victim arrived to seel their items, the suspect showed a handgun and stole the property from them. No serious injuries have been reported.

Police would like to remind people that use these apps to be aware of their surroundings and use caution when meeting with prospective buyers. Officers suggest that meetings are scheduled in a well-lit, public place to minimize the possibility of theft.
