BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. -- An early morning tractor trailer tanker rollover with an ethanol spill shut down both directions of Interstate 690 in Baldwinsville for nearly nine hours today.
The Interstate was shut down between the Van Buren Road and Downer Street exits and reopened as of 2:30 p.m, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.
The Onondaga County Dispatch Center said that as of 10:30 a.m. the spill had been contained but the highway remained closed as crews worked to get the truck back on its wheels.
The first reports of the truck overturning came in at 5:22 a.m. this morning and Baldwinsville Police and Fire Department along with Syracuse Fire Department and NOVA ambulance all responded. Spill response teams were also called to the scene.
Deputies say the highway could be closed for several hours. At this time the tanker is still on its side and was said to be carrying about 11,000 gallons of ethanol.
A nearby assisted living home, Baldwinsville Syracuse Home at McHarrie Place, says they have ordered all 300 residents to stay inside and to not start any vehicles due to the spill.
