Police in Utica have arrested a 23-year-old man who they said attacked his grandmother and lit her apartment on fire.

A.J. Anderson has been charged with Attempted Murder in the 2nd Degree and Assault in the 1st Degree.

Police said Anderson attacked his grandmother, a 68-year-old woman, around 8:50 p.m. Sunday at her apartment on West St. When officers arrived, they noticed the apartment was on fire.

Police said they made their way inside and found the woman with lacerations and burns on her body. She told them Anderson attacked her with a knife before he set her apartment on fire.

Anderson had left the apartment before officers arrived, but police found him around 4:30 a.m. Monday at the Happy Journey Motel. Police said he surrendered peacefully.

His grandmother is in critical condition at a Syracuse hospital, according to investigators.
