Volunteers looking for bragging rights at Firefighter Winter Games

The Winter Games are more than fun for volunteer firefighters.

Sure, bragging rights are on the line, but they 'play' in full turnout gear, which means it's also a realistic training exercise, with emphasis on speed, efficiency and team work--skills used in fighting fires.

42 departments from across New York, with more than 200 volunteer firefighters, are competing.

The games are also a great spectator sport, with family members and others cheering 'their' teams on (everyone's welcome to watch). The Firemen's Association of the State of NY (FASNY) is in its 14th year of sponsoring the two day event.

Here's the schedule:

Saturday (at Greek Peak)

  • 7:45 - 11:00 a.m. -- Tube Racing
  • 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. -- Stokes Basket Carry (Former Sled Pull)
  • 9:30 - 1:00 p.m. -- Firefighter Geocache (Scavenger Hunt)
  • 11:00 - 1:30 p.m. -- Hose Relay
  • 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. -- Tug-O-War

Sunday (at SUNY Cortland Park Center Alumni Ice Arena)

  • 7:00 - 1:00 p.m. -- Broomball Tournament
  • Awards Ceremony Immediately Following the Broomball Tournament
