Friday is last day to register to vote in New York

Why people come out to the polls

If you want to vote on Election Day in New York this November you need to be registered by Friday, October 12.

According to the New York State Board of Elections, mail-in voter registration forms must be postmarked by midnight Friday, and received by the Board of Elections no later than October 17.

"Registration has been brisk for a mid-term, " said Onondaga County Election Commissioner Dustin Czarny. "We expect today to be pretty high volume as well."

The voter registration form can be downloaded from the state elections website. People can also register online through the Department of Motor Vehicles at their MyDMV site or at your local county board of elections.

According to the New York Board of Elections, people who have moved to a new county within New York must re-register with their new address. If you are registered to vote and have moved to a new address in the same county, you should notify the county board of elections in writing about the move no later than Wednesday, October 17.

Additionally, voters who want to change their party enrollment to participate in a primary in 2019 must submit the change to your local board of elections no later than Friday.

"People died for your right to vote, registering is the first step to exercise that right," Czarny said.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.
