Weather a factor in deadly Martinsburg crash

Lewis County

Winter weather has been determined as a contributing factor in a deadly car crash in Martinsburg, according to New York State Police.

The crash occurred Thursday around 5:30 a.m. on State Route 12, after a vehicle driven by Meghan E. Mathys, 37, of Lowville, crossed over the center line and side swiped a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, State Police said.

Mathys' vehicle then spun into the northbound lane where her vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a truck driven by Benjamin J. Russell, 28, of Old Forge.

Mathys was pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police.

Russell was transported to Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville, for a minor injury, State Police said.

State Police say their investigation is continuing.
