Wind Chill Warnings/Winter Weather Advisories through Monday

Cold temperatures and gusty winds will make for dangerous wind chill values.

A wind chill warning is in effect for most of CNY including Syracuse (except for Wayne & northern Cayuga counties where an advisory is in place).

This wind chill warning is in effect from now until 7 PM Monday.

A wind chill warning is issued when strong winds will combine with cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is -15 to -35 degrees below zero for a period of several hours. If you will be outdoors, use common sense and dress warmly. Make sure that all exposed skin is covered. If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold to prevent frostnip, frostbite and hypothermia.

Wind chill reminders (on exposed skin):

You can get frostbite in 30 minutes when the wind chill is -20 (below zero).

You can get frostbite in 20 minutes when the wind chill is -30 (below zero).

You can get frostbite in 10 minutes when the wind chill is -40 (below zero).

A winter weather advisory is also in effect for Oswego, Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties now until 5 PM Monday.

A winter weather advisory means winter conditions are expected or occurring, but should also cause travel slowdowns, not difficulties. Weak, but persistent lake effect snow showers will continue now into the first half of Monday. Travel will be slower than usual in these counties. If you will be traveling in these areas allow for extra time to reach your destination.

If your area has a winter weather advisory, here is what you should do:

-- Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to steady snow.

-- While the amount of snow in the advisory area will not be overwhelming, enough snow will occur to cause snow covered and slippery conditions, especially on untreated and unplowed roads.

-- Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.

-- Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on

-- Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if warnings are issued you will know.

-- Periodically check NBC-3, CBS-5 and CW-6 for updates.
