Are Facebook memories now travelling to the future? Tech glitch has some thinking "yes"
NEW YORK -- Facebook users awoke this morning to learn they made friends on the site decades before it, or the internet, even existed.
The site congratulated users on 46 solid years of friendship on Facebook -- Despite the site only being 11 years old and half of users being under the age of 40.
You might've seen it as a glitch in the Matrix showing you the future of your friendship, but we're sorry to report it was just your run-of-the-mill technical glitch.
According to Tech Insider, the problem may have been caused by Facebook losing timestamps for friendships.
TI commentator Helene explained in the comment section of the site some friendships with "lost" timestamps might have fell back on the unix systems default date of Jan. 1, 1970 GMT, making Dec. 31, 1969 the new date once the timezone had been corrected.
