Family ties- Smith Family father and son square off one last time

For this week's Toyota High School Athlete of the Week we're keeping it in the family.

The last four years, matchups with Syracuse and West Genesee High School lacrosse has meant a little more.

That's because on the Syracuse City sideline you have top-notch coach Shaun Smith leading the Cougars.

Smith lives in the West Genesee district, meaning his son Ryan plays for the Wildcats and legendary coach Mike Messere.

That means twice per season, the father and son compete against one another.

On Thursday, for the 8th and final time it was a family affair in the spring for this lacrosse clan.

West Genesee won the game 20-6, so Ryan plans on "rubbing it in a little bit" but even with the loss, Shaun certainly appreciated the moment competing against his son.

Next season, Shaun can actually root for his son without any ill effect on his own program.

Ryan is among the best in the area, continuing his college career at the Division-I level next season at Albany. Shaun can be seen around town in his Great Dane purple and gold attire.

But for one final game, the gravity of the moment was certainly special.
