Get to know Iona, Syracuse hoops Tuesday night foe

Jim Boeheim leads Syracuse against Iona on Tuesday night

It might only be the second game of the season, but Syracuse Basketball meets a tough team on Tuesday night.

Iona comes calling for the first time since 2010, and even in that game seven years ago the Orange only won by six.

Tuesday night might just be as close.

The Gaels won 23 games in 2016-2017 and won the MAAC Tournament en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. While they lost in round one, it was to Oregon which made it all the way to the Final Four.

Granted, Iona did lose to Albany in its season opener 69-67, but it's still a dangerous team.

In that season opener, senior TK Edogi came off the bench to lead the Gaels with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Deyshonee Much chipped in with 15 points.

Iona shot just 18% from three point range and was outrebounded 47-27.

But the question of who wins Tuesday may have much less to do with Iona.

Syracuse, for its part, could be better than advertised. The Orange was led by 18 points from Tyus Battle and 11 points from Oshae Brissett in its season opener.

In that 77-45 win over Cornell, Syracuse started slow before opening a 12-point lead at halftime and ultimately winning by 32.

Indeed, the 2017-2018 Orange is young but has potential with its pieces in place to exceed national expectations.

Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome, it's not on traditional television.

You can watch the game on the ACC Network Extra, and we'll bring you the best plays on the networks of CNY Central at 11:00 p.m.
