Onondaga C.C. Women's Basketball welcomes group of new recruits to campus

The Onondaga Lazers women's basketball program held a national letter of intent signing ceremony with its new recruits on Friday.

The Onondaga Community College Women's Basketball program is coming off a trip to the NJCAA Region III National Tournament in March.

Now, the Lazers are welcoming in a brand new recruiting class led by a pair of Central New York players.

The Lazers is keeping their talent local by recruiting from nearby high schools. Their two top new recruits are Westhill's Katelyn Karleski and Liverpool's Holly Sleeth, who both joined the Onondaga women's basketball coach, Mike Wheeler, at Allyn Hall on Friday morning to make it official with a National Letter of Intent signing.

Each recruit was joined alongside their families.

Other recruits came from Utica, Albany and Rochester. With these local recruits, many are hopeful that the Lazers women's basketball program will come home with a national title in 2019.

The Lazers went all the way to Rockford, Illinois back in March for the NJCAA National Tournament.

"At our school too, we do a signing for D-II and D-I," former Westhill standout Katelyn Karleski said. "So it's nice to get honored here for a college like this to sign for sports."

"When Coach [Mike] Wheeler reached out to me, I was super excited especially because it's close to home," former Liverpool star Holly Sleeth added. "So it'll be easy to get to practice and stuff."

"We've got some great guards coming in," Wheeler explained. "Katelyn Karleski from Westhill, an all CNY player. She's a great basketball player -- she's going to help us out a lot. We just got great program players that come from great programs. Holly comes from Liverpool."

The event was the first of its kind for any athletics program at Onondaga.

Lazers Athletic Director Mike Borsz said more athletic programs plan to follow suit in the coming years.
