Cicero-North Syracuse marches on to Regionals after convincing Sectional Championship win
One of New York State's top teams is moving on to regionals next week.
Cicero-North Syracuse, now ranked No. 3 in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association poll in the large school division, cruised past West Genesee to capture the Section III, Class AA Championship on Saturday.
The Northstars were once again led by their senior quarterback, Conner Hayes.
Hayes' two touchdown passes early helped create separation, which was then capped off by a 77-yard touchdown run by speedster Jeremiah Willis, along with a 43-yard touchdown run by Jai'quawn McGriff.
In the end, the Northstars ran away with the win, and the Sectional Title, 40-0.
"I mean, these kids have bought in to absolutely everything we've asked them to do," C-NS head coach Dave Kline said. "It's been an incredible, incredible run. If you think about it, our kids are seniors now, and came with us as sophomores when we pulled them up. They're 30-2 in their last three years until this point in time. That's pretty amazing. These are hardworking, great kids."
"I definitely had belief that something special could happen at C-NS," Hayes explained. "I think the community really rallied around the football team and the players really rallied around the coaches and the coaching staff. We just all bought in, and once you buy in, you know, there's nobody stopping you but yourself."
C-NS will next meet Elmira, the Class AA champion out of Section IV, in the Regional Final to be played from Bragman Stadium in Cicero next weekend.
