Jessica Welsh is Central New York's field hockey equivalent of Peyton Manning.
Just like Manning, who surpassed Brett Favre as first on the career touchdowns list this past Sunday night, Welsh is the all-time leader in goals scored in Section 3 field hockey.
Welsh, who plays for the Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton field hockey team, has more than 100 goals in her career. She started in 7th grade, playing for Hamilton until the two schools merged her junior season. Her goals still increased each year, and is approaching 40 in her senior season.
"I've had great teammates behind me." Welsh says. "Hitting the ball up to me, I don't know..I just like scoring."
Originally coached by her mother at Hamilton, Welsh has been under the tutelage of Patti Vaughan the past two years, with Vaughan saying she was pretty much a finished product when she came over from Hamilton.
"She possesses an incredible set of offensive skills," Vaughan says. "She's probably the most prolific scorer I've seen and I've coached for 34 years."
Welsh is a three-sport star, standing out in both basketball and softball, and she says each sport makes her a better field hockey player and vice versa. As for the next step, Welsh says she'd like to play field hockey in college, but is still undecided about where she will take her talents next season.
Her Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton squad won their quarterfinal matchup with Sauquoit Valley on Tuesday, and will play in the semifinals on Saturday.
