Onondaga Tigers claim 8th Class D Football Championship in school history
Herkimer might have started out with a lead thanks to Wyatt Renshaw, but the Tigers quickly caught up.
The Tigers scored 20 straight points en route to a 20-12 Section III Class D Championship game.
Onondaga’s defense gave Herkimer QB James Aiello and company trouble all night, forcing five turnovers throughout the contest, including an interception returned for a touchdown and an interception that sealed the Tigers victory.
"Heck of a team effort" said Onondaga quarterback Zach Delaney.
"They gave us a good fight, but we pushed through as a team, we're a close knit family and we're all in it together" Delaney adds.
Tigers offense and defense was spot on tonight as both squads found the end zone. Helping the Tigers to win were Delaney with one touchdown and Jason Holbrook with two touchdowns.
"It speaks volumes, you know these guys have played a lot of football and they've just done a terrific job and they never shut down, there was a little bit of adversity but they came back for it" says Head Coach Steve Louis.
That adversity was Herkimer closing the gap to just eight points at 20-12, that's when Delaney stepped up for a key interception to ice the game.
"Saw there was only a minute on the clock, so I know they had to throw the ball they had to go the air. I saw the ball go into the air so I knew I had to go up and get it, got it, kept my feet inbounds I knew it was right there."
Onondaga wins its 8th title in school history, following in the football footsteps of legends like Mike Hart and Latavius Murray.
Now, these Tigers hope to keep the journey going for a return trip to the Carrier Dome for a State Championship.
