Sectional Championship Monday: F-M, Westhill and Baldwinsville move on with victories

Westhill's Jack Grooms celebrates his game-tying goal late in the second half of Monday's Class B Sectional Championship with Cazenovia.

A pair of boys soccer sectional championship games were played from Jamesville-DeWitt high school Monday night.

The first game of the night was a Class B matchup between No. 1 Westhill and No. 2 Cazenovia.

The Warriors found themselves down early to Cazenovia, 1-0, in the first half. Late in the second half, though, Westhill had an answer.

Jack Groom found the back of the net and tied the game late in regulation. Groom continued his stellar play into overtime as well.

The junior netted the game-winning goal in overtime to crown the Warriors as back-to-back Class B champions.

Westhill will continue practice as usual as they await who they will play next in the New York State Regional finals.

No. 2 Baldwinsville and No. 1 Fayetteville-Manlius picked up right where the preceding game left off.

After the starting goalie for the Bees went down early in the first half, sophomore Nolan Murphy stepped up, making highlight reel saves for Baldwinsville.

That would not be enough, though, as at the end of regulation, they found themselves in a 1-1 tie.

The two teams went to overtime where a corner kick for the Hornets found themselves bouncing off of multiple players and finding their way into the back of the net.

Fayetteville-Manlius was crowned head of Class AA with its 2-1 win, giving the school its 24th sectional title and first since 2014, where it also took down the Bees.

F-M will face Section II champion Shenendehowa on Saturday in the state regionals.

In field hockey, Baldwinsville took down Cicero-North Syracuse on Monday night, 2-0.

With the win, the Bees earn their second consecutive sectional championship, advancing to the state tournament.
