Toyota High School Athlete- Alex Payne paces J-D volleyball

Alex Payne helped lead Jamesville-DeWitt to its first Section III title in 41 years in 2016

Jamesville-DeWitt won its first Section III title in 41 years in 2016, the culmination of a third straight trip to the championship.

The reason the Red Rams got over the hump? Their multi-faceted senior leadership.

Alex Payne is one of those seniors, a star as soon as you watch her step on the court, Payne matches that athletic ability with a great sense of leadership and focus.

“She’s constantly teaching, constantly helping out her teammates. It’s kind of that pay it forward for our program. So the 9th graders really look up to her and they watch everything she does so we're kind of excited to have those type of players in the program" Head Coach Patricia Ferris says.

For Payne, she's a natural at the sport and the support of her teammates. Now that she's turning that into a Division-I career at SUNY Albany, it's almost surreal.

"It means a lot to me" Payne says.

"I’d never thought that I’d be playing volleyball, I thought I’d be running track so to come up and to be able to play here and play in college is huge for me" she adds.

The Red Rams appear poised to potentially capture another Section III crown, currently sitting at 5-2. No doubt, Payne and her fellow seniors like Amy Shen and Lexie Cambacorto will be pushing for that until the final whistle.
