West Genesee, Westhill set to meet pair of Long Island teams in NYSPHSAA Championships

The West Genesee boys lacrosse team is aiming for its 16th New York State Championship under legendary head coach Mike Messere.

The west side of Syracuse has plenty to be proud of in terms of high school boys lacrosse in 2018.

The West Genesee and Westhill boys lacrosse teams have advanced to the New York State Championship Games in their respective classifications, preparing to meet a pair of Long Island-area teams on Saturday from St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, New York.

The Wildcats are accustomed to reaching this point, now on the verge of their 16th State Championship under legendary head coach Mike Messere.

West Genesee will meet the Ward Melville Patriots, another perennial powerhouse program, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

As seen in a tweet from the NYSPHSAA twitter account, West Genesee and Ward Melville have combined to win 24 of the 41 total Class A State Championship Games ever played.

Ward Melville took down Niskayuna in the other state semifinal, 18-2.

Meanwhile, in Class C, the Westhill Warriors are preparing for a matchup with the Islip Buccaneers on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. from St. John Fisher College.

Westhill has never reached the New York State Championship Game -- not even the Final Four.

In this banner season for the Warriors, they will have their hands full against Islip out of Long Island, who beat Pelham Memorial in the state semifinal, 14-4.
