Syracuse men, women earn at-large bids to 2018 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

Syracuse coach John Desko leads the Orange into the 2018 NCAA Tournament as the No. 8 seed.

Syracuse University is once again represented in the NCAA Tournament field, making it the 37th appearance in the history of the men's program.

The men earned the No. 8 seed and will host the Cornell Big Red on Sunday, May 13 at 7:15 p.m.

During the regular season, Cornell defeated Syracuse by five goals, making for an interesting case as to why the Big Red are being forced to play at Syracuse.

NCAA Tournament Committee Chair John Hardt explained the committee's reasoning during Sunday night's Selection Show special on ESPNU.

"The committee spent a lot of time looking at this matchup," Hardt said. "Cornell had a nice head-to-head win over Syracuse earlier in the season. The two teams scored RPI's that were close, but we looked at Syracuse and they were 3-1 versus common opponents whereas Cornell was 2-2. Syracuse was undefeated in the ACC during the regular season with quality wins over Notre Dame, Duke and Virginia. Quite frankly, Cornell had a couple of bad losses to Colgate and Princeton, compared to Syracuse's worst loss, which was to Navy.

"We just thought that, again, overall profile gave the edge to Syracuse and that's why they got the higher seed and are hosting in the Dome," he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Syracuse women's lacrosse team will meet Princeton in the opening round on Friday from the campus of Boston College.
