Midway Drive-In set to re-open Friday in Oswego County

A favorite summer pastime will soon be open for the season. The Midway Drive-In Theater in Minetto is set to re-open on Friday.

The announcement comes after much uncertainty following the owner's death. John Nagelschmidt died in April due to a backhoe accident. John's son and daughter, John and Heidi Nagelschmidt, are now the owners of midway drive in after their father's passing.

Its been an emotionally journey for the family as the drive-in won't be the same without their father and dedicated owner for decades. They say their father did most of the behind the scenes work so it has been a challenge to get the business back up and running.

The drive-in is no stranger to struggles. Three years ago, it was badly damaged by severe storms traveling through Oswego County. High winds and heavy rain ripped through the historic movie screen, causing massive destruction. John and Heidi said it has been a long time coming and the two are excited to bring back the classic movie spot to the community.

"I know it's going to be different and it will never be the same, but he was here with us and me for 48 years so we will keep it going the way we always did and be here for the community and try to enjoy it as much as I can," Heidi said.

There will be a memorial movie night on Thursday to remember the late owner, John Nagelschmidt. It's free and open to the public. A documentary about the midway drive-in will be shown on the big screen. Doors open at 7 p.m.
