Laura Hand is best-known as the news anchor on Weekend Today in Central New York, Saturday and Sunday mornings on NBC 3.
She also anchors and produces NBC 3’s Monday Night Answer Desk segments---viewers can call or email questions about specific topics of concern to a panel of experts.
Her most ‘unfavorite’ words are ‘there’s nothing to do here’ which is why she maintains the “In Your Community” website events calendar, and also produces ‘Weekends Best Bets’ and ‘The Week Ahead’ to help Central New Yorkers be aware of how much is available here, much of it volunteer-driven.
Laura is a long-time member of The Salvation Army/Syracuse board. She also is passionate about encouraging children to love reading, and for 30+ years has organized the station’s ‘Book Breaks’ summer reading campaign.
She is in the process of having her dog certified as a therapy dog, to have children read to her (and learn about how to handle animals).
For the past several years, Laura has emceed the Italian Flag raising at Syracuse City Hall, which opens La Festa Italiana.
Many people don’t realize she spoke Italian before she learned English, and remains fluent in Italian. At this past year’s Festa she also gave a presentation on Trieste, where she spent her childhood summers, and still visits relatives regularly.
